Pride of the Night
Simba | The most powerful predator in Africa
After five nights photography at a watering hole in Etosha National Park, a pride of lions finally came down to drink, they were so close that I could even hear their breathing. The light of the camera flash rebounded from their retinas and reflected their gaze on the water. Lions usually hunt at night and night time ambushes of animals that come to drink at the watering holes during the dry season is a favoured tactic. Their diet is principally based on ungulates (deer, antelope, zebra, etc.) but they will occasionally take prey that varies in size from elephants and rhinos to small rodents.
Highly Commended. Mammals category. WPY 2007 - Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
