The Fisher
Billfish | The cheetah of the oceans
The Indo-Pacific sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, is considered one of the quickest, most elegant and powerful fish found, able to reach about 110 km per hour and close to 3 meters in size. After strenuous free diving, I was able to shoot a photograph of this gorgeous specimen in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Adorned for the fish, fins raised and breathtaking colors dancing, a sailfish surrounds a school of sardines preparing to strike. Each forward rush is punctuated by a startling flare of the dorsal fin, which more than doubles the hunter's profile.
