Rio Celeste | The crown jewel of Northern Costa Rica
The source of the Río Celeste, these turquoise waters are considered to be one of the world’s most extraordinary natural phenomena. The incredible colour is caused by a chemical reaction between sulphurous gases escaping from the river bed and the precipitation of calcium carbonate rich water seeping through a crack and joining the principal flow at this point. Under these hostile conditions it seems incredible that vegetation can flourish, including on a tiny rock in the middle of its waters.
