The Gaze
Gelada | The last of the grass-grazing primate
Isolated in the remote Ethiopian Highlands the Gelada Baboons live along the ridge of sculpted cliffs at “The Roof of Africa”. During a storm and far from their shelter, a small group of females and babies gathered tightly together to protect themselves from the rain. I managed to gain their confidence to the point where they let me enter the group. I was fascinated by the way this infant stared at me. The mixture of interest and shyness of its gaze, provoked in me a pleasant sense of human warmth.
